XnView is second on my list of free image viewers, after FastStone Image Viewer. I have been using Adobe Lightroom and wanted to test compatiblity with XnView when it comes to image keywords. So, I downloaded XnView again and installed it to my computer in order to see what is new. To my surprise I noticed right away that XnView has improved its ablity to handle image metadata. Not only that XnView metadata is compatible with Adobe Lightroom but it gave me great insight into how the XMP framework looks like.

XnView has become awesome !

XnView is an efficient multimedia viewer, browser and converter. It's very fast and easy to use. But more importantly it supports more than 500 graphics formats. Aug 18, 2020 XnView MP is a more polished and much extended version of the original image viewer called XnView. It includes many more features and enhancements compared to its little brother. One of the main improvements of XnView MP over the original is its new support for multiple cores of your processor in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. BlackCam helps you to take stunning black and white photographs. Create easily stunning images with vintage or instant effect. Xnview.exe, xnview.exe, VSWE78BB9A4B6D6.exe, VSWCE0CE8173C8A.exe and VSWB6EDB19292DA.exe are the most common filenames for this program's installer. The first time I reviewed XnView image viewer was back in 2007 and I liked it a lot. Now, more than two years after I looked at XnView again focusing on image metadata. The improvements and new features that Pierre Gougelet has added to XnView are just awesome! And it still remains free for home and non-profit use.

The user interface remains pretty much the same, but Pierre has added lots of goodies under the covers. In particular, XnView has added support for XMP and has extended its support for IPTC. In addition the web gallery generation engine has been improved tremendously by making it very easy to create and edit gallery templates. Let me get a little bit into the details.

XnView creates XMP based on the IPTC and EXIF metadata

XnView was one of the few free Image Viewer that has been supporting creation and editing of IPTC metadata fields like: keywords, caption, city, country. But, for a long time there was no support for the XMP framework. It’s latest version however support XMP. In particular, XnView creates XMP compliant metadata based on existing IPTC and EXIF metadata. Currently, XnView doesn’t support the direct editing of the XMP XML file…and it shouldn’t…it’s just too easy to make mistakes when hand editing XML files.

What does this mean? It’s pretty simple. You select a bunch of pictures and then you choose Edit IPTC metadata (CTRL+i) and then a nice window comes up where you can edit as many IPTC fields as applicable to all the pictures you have selected. Then you hit Write All Selected and voila! All your IPTC fields have been populated and also the XMP file has been updated as well. You can choose not to use XMP at all which is also cool if you don’t care about XMP. It is very easy to see your image metadata by using the tabs in the bottom pane.

The best thing about the XnView image browser tab is that the thumbnails contain small visual markers indicating what type of image metadata each image contains. Just by looking at the thumbnails, you can see which images contain EXIF, IPTC, XMP and GPS information. This is very powerful and handy!

XnView has a very flexible online gallery generation engine

I’ve been playing for a few hours with the online gallery generation capability in XnView. I love it ! When I review other programs for their online photo gallery generation capability I look for how easy it is to create templates and edit them. Sometimes I want to insert speacial links to my pages, advertising and most of all I want to control the way everything looks. I am very impressed with how XnView handles the online photo gallery generation.

I have created my own template in a matter of minutes starting from one template that was included with the program. Then I was able to insert IPTC fields into the gallery. I used City, Country and Caption from the IPTC fields. This means that I can only focus on adding the right things into my images and then generate the online galleries without having to insert all that information by hand. See my examples below.

Essentials for organizing your digital photos

Here are the essential products and services I have come to rely on for many years to keep my media collection organized and safe. Even though these are affiliate links, I wholeheartedly recommend them.

Excellent Lightroom and Picasa alternative. If you're looking for a cheaper and simpler photo manager then ACDSee Photo Studio for Mac(70% off until November 18, 2020) or ACDSee Pro for Windows(20% off Lifetime License until November 18, 2020) is my preferred solution for organizing your media on your computer. It has a very fast browser, beautiful image editing capabilities and you don't work with catalogs at all.

If you do a lot of image editing like I do, I recommend using Adobe Lightroom Classic CC via the annual Adobe Creative Cloud subscription. Lightroom has excellent photo editing capabilities. Yes, Lightroom has a steeper learning curve as you have to learn to keep your catalogs in sync with your hard drive. But if you do image editing, Adobe Lightroom is my favorite.

I recommend Backblaze Cloud Backup for affordable & reliable unlimited cloud backup. I have been using Backblaze for backing up all pictures & videos for more than 4 years now. All my invaluable digital memories are safe and secure.

In addition, make sure you have an inexpensive and reliable external hard drive for backing everything up. It is absolutely essential for backing up your media regularly.
